Curriculum 11-12

Year 11 and 12

Heritage

At Kilbreda College, our students are encouraged and supported to achieve their potential and to strive for excellence in whichever field of endeavour they choose to pursue.

In Years 11 and 12, students have two pathways to choose from at Kilbreda College; the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). This enables our students to choose the pathway best suited to their learning style and future pathway.

For detailed information regarding Year 11 and 12 subject offerings and more, view our Year 11 and 12 Course Handbook.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

Heritage

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands on learning program for year 11 and 12 students at the College. The program focuses on developing skills and knowledge that will be helpful for students in their future employment, study and life.

Students undertake study of various topics and themes that align closely with the College values with a focus on Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development and Work Related Skills.
Kilbreda’s VCAL program includes the following subjects:

  1. Literacy skills
  2. Numeracy skills
  3. Integrated Work Related Skills and Personal Development Skills
  4. Structured Workplace Learning
  5. VET Certificate II/III of students choice (delivered at TAFE once per week)
  6. VET Certificate II Business (Intermediate students) and VET Certificate II Active Volunteering (Senior students)
  7. Religious Education
  8. Fitness
  9. Enrichment Day

VCAL students have a program designed to support their attendance at TAFE and their Structured Workplace Learning.  Students attend the College on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Wednesday and Friday are spent learning off campus with one day dedicated to their TAFE course and one day to their Work Placement.

Heritage

Fortnightly on a Monday (Day 6) VCAL students participate in Enrichment Day.  This is a day spent on experiential learning.  Students may attend excursions linked to other areas of their curriculum or have opportunities to participate in short courses some on and some off campus that add to their list of qualifications.

Students partaking in the VCAL program gain a headstart towards their chosen industry by enrolling into a Certificate II or III course at a local TAFE provider. Students who complete the full two years of the VCAL program can expect to graduate from the College with a nationally recognised Certificate III as well as their applied learning certificate. Students also undertake a range of short courses such as First Aid, Food Handling, Responsible Service of Alcohol and many more to enhance their employment options.

After graduating from the VCAL, students can pursue employment options, further study or other apprenticeships and traineeships whilst utilising the skills and knowledge they have developed and attained in the VCAL program at Kilbreda.
