PASTORAL CARE AT KILBREDA

The usual place for student pastoral needs to be met is within the school.

  • Students are known and cared for
  • Students are supported by a caring homeroom structure
  • Staff and families are in partnership and carers concerns will be followed through with relevant staff.

The way the school is structured and the overall culture that is established is a vital component of the set of pastoral practices that are the norm of the school.

  • Student referrals address the need for support from staff, including a counsellor, within the school or specialist assistance beyond the school community.
  • Student updates can be initiated by any staff member and are forwarded to relevant staff.

Central to all pastoral practice is establishing trusting and supportive relationships between students and staff.

  • Students' hopes, beliefs and privacy are respected.
  • Indirect or direct disclosures which indicate potential self-harm or other real concerns must be followed through with relevant staff.
  • All staff can take part in the Senior School Mentors program.

At the same time it needs to be noted that staff-staff relationships are the most powerful model of pastoral practice we can offer to young people.

  • Staff will model values and appropriate behaviours for students
  • Collegial networks exist at year levels and with the Leadership Team as a means of contributing to the well being of both staff and students
Retreat

Pastoral practices are central to good curriculum.

  • Student management and learning will be informed by fair, clear policies and practices. (eg Learning and Teaching, Student Management, Bullying)
  • Students are assisted in the selection of their studies and in their transition at each stage of learning.

All young people want to learn and it is therefore crucial that they can experience success within a valued curriculum offered by the school.

  • Students will be encouraged to be the best person they can.
  • Opportunities are provided for students to be involved in a range of programs within the school and the wider community. (Community Service, Yrs 10 & 7 Big Sister Little Sister Program, Senior School Mentors)

We continue seeking ways to offer programs that have multiple entry points and flexible time spans for achievement.

  • Students learning needs are identified and addressed.
  • Staff are flexible yet firm.
  • VCAL & VET studies meet specific needs/interests

Assessment and Reporting practices that enable students to experience success are essential.

  • A variety of assessment practices give students feedback that affirms their achievements and encourages their learning
  • Assessment as Learning is achieved and practised.
  • We hold that students can learn from their mistakes. We do not give up on students.
