Kilbreda College’s Library is a newly extended and renovated environment, offering facilities for classes to work in stimulating and comfortable surroundings. Distinct areas allow four classes to work concurrently. The Library also contains a supervised Study Room for VCE students and an area for Careers counselling.
Information literacy is a skill that is essential in order to manage the Information Age. Research skills instruction is provided by highly qualified and experienced teacher-librarians. By learning to efficiently and effectively use the vast array of online and print resources, students develop independent life-long skills.
The Library’s computers give students access to online databases, including newspapers and journals. This electronic pathway is supported by a twelve month supply of hard copies of the newspapers and journals.
Teaching staff are assisted in the development of curriculum and individual learning activities. Access to resources including teaching kits, posters, maps and DVDs enhances the delivery of curriculum. A well equipped Audio-Visual Department is contained within the Library. It is
staffed by expert library technicians whose knowledge and advice enhances the teaching and learning experiences of staff and students. The Audio-Visual Department manages the delivery of the College’s collection of online and digital resources. Digital still and video cameras are available for staff and student use.
Regular book talks to English classes are held in the Fiction Area. Reading for pleasure and relaxation is promoted and many enrichment programs are offered, such as The Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Yabbies Book Club gathers students from Years 7 to 9. Year 7 and 8 students are encouraged to participate in the Kids’ Lit Quiz. Readers’ Cup Competitions involve students in Years 9 and 10. The Tim Tams Book Club attracts readers in Years 9 to 12. The Hard Cover Café is held after school for VCE students to discuss literature.
In the spirit of Brigidine Education’s core values, all students are equipped to use the Library’s vast collection of resources and they are assisted in their learning needs. The Library staff aim to engender a love of learning in all students, especially the most vulnerable.
