SOCIAL AWARENESS

Justice and Democracy Forum

Kilbreda College is one of the seven Brigidine secondary colleges that engages in the Justice and Democracy Forum. Supported by the Victorian Brigidines and Kilbreda staff, this active forum promotes student participation and leadership. Students and staff meet on a regular basis, both at Kilbreda and in the wider Brigidine schools' network.

The forum aims to develop student awareness of and understanding of various social issues. It explores ways of raising awareness within the school community through school assemblies, forums, regular meetings, posters and displays. Students also undertake actions such as letter-writing, petitions and the annual "Winter Sleep Out”, thus allowing opportunity to participate in seeking solutions to injustice.

Amnesty International

Kilbreda's Amnesty International group fosters student understanding of the issues that effect prisoners of conscience throughout the world. It engages in action as well as reflection and study.

Caritas Australia

Kilbreda supports Caritas through the promotion of Project Compassion and other special appeals or actions that arise throughout the year. Senior students and staff participate in the "Think Globally Act Locally” programs facilitated by Caritas, in countries such as India, the Philippines, Tanzania.

Community Service

Students at Kilbreda have many opportunities for Community Service. These programs enhance students understanding and growth, and provide values support and assistance to local community programs.

St Vincent de Paul

Year 11 students, with the support of staff, constitute Kilbreda's dynamic St Vincent de Paul group. Students support local conferences of the St Vincent de Paul Society through actions such as the collection of food and the raising of funds. The members of the St. Vincent de Paul group provide breakfast once a week as a way of inviting other students to be part of this important network.
