KOORI PERSPECTIVES

vicki couzens - reconciliation

Through the Koori Staff Network, Kilbreda College strives to promote an understanding of the history of the traditional owners of Australia. The staff involved in this network meet on a regular basis to promote knowledge and respect for the culture and spirituality of the Aboriginal nations and an understanding of the issues that affect so many today, thus calling for reconciliation.

At Kilbreda College the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are flown in respect for the original inhabitants of this land.

Koori students enrolled at Kilbreda College are valued members of our school community. They enhance the cultural diversity of the learning community and are encouraged to share their story with others.

Membership of the 'Dare to Lead' project has provided resources and networks to Kilbreda College. Links with the community of Santa Teresa in the Northern Territory are incorporated into Year 11 students' Central Australia trip, an example of one of the many ways Kilbreda honours its core values of welcoming the most vulnerable and witnessing and practicing social justice.

The vision statement of the Melbourne Archdiocese:

that a reconciled Australia will only emerge when the unique perspectives of Indigenous peoples' understandings of culture, land and spirituality are heard, received and celebrated

The curriculum at Kilbreda College reflects a commitment to Koori perspectives and resources used are continually updated and critiqued.

Staff and students are given many opportunities to develop an authentic response which is informed by gospel values. The work of the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry is seen as significant. Reconciliation week is celebrated by Kilbreda College.
